Chemical Peels

    What are Chemical Peels?

Chemical peels are simple chemical solutions that can affect the areas where they are applied, mainly the face, neck, eyes, and hands. Most chemical peels are derived from fruits, milk, and plants. These are some of the most natural substances you can think of. Common peels include glycolic, yellow, lactic, and TCA peels.

    What can Chemical peels do?

Chemical peels are used to treat many issues with your skin, some of which include:

    • Sun damage

    • Uneven skin tone

    • Pigmentation and melasma

    • Acne

    • Acne scars

    • Fine lines and wrinkles

    • Dull and damaged skin

    • Rejuvenation of the skin

    How do Chemical Peels work?

Chemical peels are mainly acids. This is because human skin is acidic, with a pH of 5.5. To affect the skin, we need to use something compatible with the skin and can penetrate it easily; hence, acids are used.

Once it reaches the deeper layer of the skin, depending on its depth, it can elicit a repair response in the skin, varying from suppressing pigment cells to increasing blood flow to collagen production. As the repair response gets triggered in the skin, you will see surface changes.

General Precautions to take while taking Chemical Peels:

    • It is best to refrain from using home-use peel systems that are now available. It is always better to let your doctor decide which peel and what concentration will work best for your problems.

    • A primed skin, meaning prepared skin, will give the best results for a chemical peel session. A good moisturizer should be applied regularly before and after the peel session as directed by the doctor. A sunblock is mandatory both before and after a chemical peel session.

    • Sometimes dryness can occur post-chemical peel session, as the skin is in a repair mode at this time. Don’t worry about it. With proper moisturizer and sunblock, it will settle in 3-4 days.
