Dental Crowns are commonly called Tooth Caps and are covers for the teeth. Crown or commonly called ‘cap’ is the type of restoration which covers the whole tooth surface so that the tooth not only functions like a normal but also looks like it and maintains the same relation with the adjacent and opposing tooth as the natural tooth. Dental Bridges-are two or more crowns or caps joined to each other.They are normally done to replace a missing tooth by taking support from neighboring teeth.

Depending on the type of material used Crowns and Bridges can be of various types :
Ceramic or Porcelain fused to Metal
Most commonly used caps. They are not only good functionally but also aesthetically. But beware of cheap substitutes that are used in place of ceramic to lower down the costs.
Metal
Pure metal caps are used specifically for the back teeth. Strength and function are similar to the ceramic caps but only the metallic appearance is a drawback for some patients.
Porcelain Fused to Metal Crown
they contain a core of metal with porcelain on the outer surface.
Acrylic
Plastic material mainly used for temporary crowns and bridges.
Gold Caps
They are things of the past, not used now because of various drawbacks.

There are restorations that can be categorized between fillings and crowns when the filling is too big that it will not be able to resist biting forces. Inlays and onlays are done to preserve the tooth structure. They are made up of ceramic or metal.
Things to be considered while doing ‘Crown & Bridge’
Bone level surrounding the teeth should be optimum for support; the tooth should not be very loose.
-Overloading of teeth should be strictly avoided otherwise it will do more harm than benefit. For e.g. if you have 3 missing back teeth then you cannot just take support from a single tooth and replace all the 3. If this is done, because of overloading you will loose that tooth also.
-If RCT has been done it should be proper.
Steps involved in ‘Crown & Bridge”
- Before starting it is always ensured that the teeth selected for crown & bridge are healthy and not compromised in any way.
- Teeth are cut to the required size
- Impression is made of both upper and lower jaw even if we have to replace the teeth in one jaw because we need to know the proper relation of upper & lower teeth also while functioning.
- Trial of metal base is done and shade is selected in cases of ceramic caps.
- Crown/ Bridge are cemented in place.

Crowns are most often done after the root canal treatment.After the root canal if we find that your natural tooth is quite weak and will not be able to bear the chewing forces and might break -then we take this decision of placing a crown on the tooth.So its not essential to put a crown after every root canal but practically we visit a dentist so late that by that time the tooth is already quite destroyed.So we have to do a crown.So the key here is to visit the dentist early so that you can avoid both root canal treatment and crown as well
